Objective: to analyze the distribution of the cohort of patients with malignant tumors of ENT organs in Gomel region over 1998-2012. Material and methods. We analyzed the absolute case numbers of cancer of the larynx, oropharynx, hypopharynx, nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. The patients were grouped in accordance with sex, age, and tumor stage. Results. The most common sites of ENT tumor were: the larynx - 40 %, the hypopharynx - 27 %, the oropharynx - 24 % (2010-2012). The dynamics of the sites: stable number of patients with laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer and cancer of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, increase in the number of patients with oropharyngeal and laryngopharyngeal cancer. The ratio of 50-64 year-old patients increased. More than half of the cases of cancer of the oropharynx, laryngopharynx, nasopharynx, nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are detected at III-IV tumor stage. Conclusion. The annual number of patients with tumors of ENT organs in Gomel region is more than 200 and is increasing due to the cases of oropharyngeal and laryngopharyngeal cancer. More than 90 % of the patients are men of the employable age. Early diagnosis of tumors of ENT organs stays a topical issue in the region.

The study group comprised 91 patients with nasal cavity cancer and paranasal sinuses cancer who received the combined modality treatment with the use of 6.3 MeV fast neutrons generated within U-120 cyclotron. The method of combined modality treatment for locally advanced malignant tumors of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses was found to be more effective compared to the conventional treatment in terms of the 5-year overall and disease-free survival rates.

Abstract Purpose The goal of this study was to develop a complete workflow allowing for conducting computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of airflow through the upper airways based on computed tomography (CT) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) studies of individual adult patients. Methods This study is based on CT images of 16 patients. Image processing and model generation of the human nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses were performed using open-source and freeware software. 3-D Slicer was used primarily for segmentation and new surface model generation. Further processing was done using Autodesk® Meshmixer TM. The governing equations are discretized by means of the finite volume method. Subsequently, the corresponding algebraic equation systems were solved by OpenFOAM software. Results We described the protocol for the preparation of a 3-D model of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses and highlighted several problems that the future researcher may encounter. The CFD results were presented based on examples of 3-D models of the patient 1 (norm) and patient 2 (pathological changes). Conclusion The short training time for new user without a prior experience in image segmentation and 3-D mesh editing is an important advantage of this type of research. Both CBCT and CT are useful for model building. However, CBCT may have limitations. The Q criterion in CFD illustrates the considerable complication of the nasal flow and allows for direct evaluation and quantitative comparison of various flows and can be used for the assessment of nasal airflow.

Rhinolithiasis is a rare pathological phenomenon, according to statistics, the incidence of rhinolith is about 1 person per 10,000 otolaryngological outpatients. Often, rhinolith is accompanied by an asymptomatic course and often becomes an accidental finding. Lack of vigilance of the otorhinolaryngologist and neglect of the possibility of using computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses, first of all, at the first stage of the patient’s treatment in an outpatient setting, often leads to an untimely diagnosis of this disease. Meanwhile, late diagnosis of rhinolith can lead to the development of purulent processes, dystrophic and atrophic changes in the nasal mucosa, naso-oral fistulas, dacryocystitis, osteomyelitis and the formation of an epidural abscess. The article presents a case of prolonged (more than 22 years) presence of a foreign body in the nasal cavity in a 26-year-old female patient, which led to the formation of rhinolith. Despite the long-term complaints and clinical manifestations of the disease with constant visits to the otorhinolaryngologist, the patient did not undergo computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses. The prescribed instrumental examinations (CT scan of the paranasal sinuses and endovideoscopy of the nasal cavity) at the Saint Petersburg Research Institute of Ear, Throat, Nose and Speech allowed us to diagnose rhinolitis of the nasal cavity and successfully carry out surgical treatment.
